Approach involves non-technical trekking followed by a technical summit section. Typical pattern: travel to the village of Sajama (Curahuara de Carangas), then transfer by road or 4x4 to an approach point near Quenuales (~4,420 m). Walk to base camp at about 4,800–4,820 m (roughly 2–3 hours), then continue to a high camp around 5,600–5,670 m (roughly 4–5 hours). Summit day is alpine-style with a pre-dawn start; the route includes steep scree and a steep ice gully that requires crampons and an ice axe. Guides are commonly used and equipment rental and guides are available in local villages. Permits or registration with park authorities are normally required for visitors.
