Sunnegga-Rothorn

Zermatt’s east-side sector, combining easy cruising around Sunnegga with higher and faster terrain above Blauherd and Rothorn.

Access: Reached from the village via the Sunnegga funicular, then gondolas and chairs onward toward Blauherd and Rothorn.

Terrain: Best for a mix of family pistes, sunny intermediate laps, and higher alpine skiing when the upper lifts are running.

Gornergrat

The scenic middle sector above Zermatt, with long descents around Rotenboden, Riffelberg, and Riffelalp.

Access: Reached on the Gornergrat railway from Zermatt, with ski access around Riffelalp, Riffelberg, Rotenboden, and Gornergrat.

Terrain: Best for long panoramic laps and varied intermediate skiing with several natural points to stop on the mountain railway line.

Alpine skiing

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Schwarzsee

Zermatt’s highest and most snow-sure corridor, running through Schwarzsee and Trockener Steg to the glacier and Italy link.

Access: Reached via the Furi lifts from Zermatt, then onward through Schwarzsee and Trockener Steg to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.

Terrain: Most relevant for high-alpine laps, glacier terrain, and days when reliable snow cover matters more than sheltered skiing.

Cross-country skiing

Täsch-Randa Nordic area

The local cross-country option for anyone based in Zermatt, using flatter valley-floor tracks between Täsch and Randa.

Access: The official Zermatt Tourism guide describes the area as reachable from Zermatt in around 12 minutes by train to Täsch.

Terrain: The same guide describes 8 km of classic tracks and 10 km of skating terrain, making it the main Nordic option near the resort.
